"One of the most daring and dramatic sea explorations of all time is retold in this cinematically astounding drama. The film follows adventurer Thor Heyerdahl who, in 1947, embarked on an astounding expedition across the Pacific Ocean on a balsa-wood raft to prove that the South Sea Islands had been settled by ancient South Americans. Despite his inability to swim and fear of water, and the complete inexperience of his crew, Thor braves the voyage which would become one of the famous expeditions ever attempted. A hugely entertaining, old-school adventure with the filmmakers recreating the journey in vivid detail."
Each year the Lord Mayor receives, on behalf of the city, a gift of a Christmas Tree from the city of Bergen in Norway. Traditionally the tree is erected in the grounds of the Civic Centre and the Mayor of Bergen comes to Newcastle to officially hand over the tree and perform the lighting ceremony.
The celebrations will take place at 5.30pm on Thursday the 5th December with a Carol Service in the Grand Entrance of the Civic Centre, after which there will be a short walk to the Christmas Tree where the Lord Mayor of Bergen will switch on the tree lights. Hoping to see familiar faces in the crowd!
